ISRAEL: THE ONLY TRUE RUSSIAN DEMOCRACY SEMINAR INITIATVE

The purpose of our on-campus initiative is to make our students aware of the connection between the Russian Jewish community and the development of modern Zionism. We will be inviting many exciting speakers. These scholars will join our discussions and engage in trying to collectively answer such pressing questions as why Israel? By providing this focused education on the influence of Russian-Jewish culture on Israel, we hope to inspire and create the next wave of educated and motivated leaders who can work towards promoting and supporting the state of Israel. These students will find outlets through which this advocacy can materialize. Establishing this gateway to Soviet Jewry will encourage both Jewish and non-Jewish students to explore their own ethnic identities as it relates to Israeli culture while bolstering the importance of Israel in their lives. In an effort to solidify their understanding, they will learn how to become active agents in strengthening their connections to Israel.

ISRAEL INITIATIVE PROJECT: By the end of the semester, you will be creating, in groups of no more than 4 students, some form of Israel initiative on campus. This is a very open-ended task, but one that will give your group a great sense of how to raise awareness of Israel at Rutgers. This can take the form of a film screening and discussion, Israeli food night, etc.. The Russian-Jewish Club board will be meeting with you twice before the event you have planned and then once after the event to document the progress and make sure that we can help you accomplish your goals.

ATTENDANCY POLICY: This seminar/ discussion series will meet every other Tuesday starting on January 22, 2013. We will be meeting from 7:30-9:00 PM at a location that will be announced later on (most likely somewhere on the College Avenue Campus). Because there will only be about 8 meetings this semester, we strongly discourage you from signing up if you intend to miss more than 2 of the meetings. Besides this, the NYC Forum we are constructing for the end of the seminar, which will be on one of the later Sundays in April, will be mandatory.

APPLICATION FORM: At this link, you will find an application form to be a part of this exciting new opportunity. Simply fill it out and email it to the address below. The Russian-Jewish Club Board will be reviewing these forms individually and contacting you separately for quick interviews in early December. These won’t be intensive in any way. It is just a measure for us to get to know you a bit better off paper.
