Jewish Arts Groups at Rutgers
Kol Halayla
Kol Halayla is Hebrew for “the voice of the night”, but here at Rutgers it means the Voice of the (Scarlet) Knight. Kol Halayla was first founded in 1995 under the name “Koleinu” as Rutgers’ first co-ed a cappella group and is still the only Jewish a cappella group on campus. We perform a diverse repertoire of traditional Jewish, Israeli, and secular music. Throughout the years, Kol Halayla has performed in many exciting venues including local synagogues, the Jewish Collegiate Festival of Performing Arts, at Hillel and Rutgers events, and at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Since 1997, Kol Halayla has hosted an annual Jewish A Cappella retreat known as Shabbat A Cappella where groups from across the US and Canada have come to participate in workshops and perform in concert. The group, now in its 19th year, is made up of a diverse group of students brought together through a love of music and performance. We hold auditions every semester, so check out our website www.kolhalayla.com and like us on Facebook (Kol Halayla) for more information on auditions and upcoming performances.
