The Eva and Arie Halpern Hillel House is the largest Hillel in America and is a unique and spectacular addition to the campus, located at 70 College Avenue, in the center of the College Avenue campus, the historic heart of Rutgers University.
The warmth of its Arts & Crafts design runs through everything – from the exterior to furnishings, even signage. We think it is the finest Jewish campus facility in the country. Come visit us, we know you’ll agree!
At 40,000 square feet, with 2 stories, 3 levels, a huge front porch right on College Avenue, a private rear patio, plus a full basement, we can run multiple programs simultaneously, providing our students, the Rutgers community, and the NJ Jewish community with an incredible resource to challenge their creativity and imaginations.
Our first floor contains a kosher, dairy/vegetarian cafe, open to the public; a beautiful lounge with comfy chairs by a stone fireplace; play room with pool table, computer games, board games and GIANT bean bags; a student leadership office; a gallery featuring original art and an interactive display on the history of Hillel; and accessible and bright staff offices.
The next level contains our gorgeous dining room, with stone accents and beautiful chandeliers, capable of seating 400+ for Shabbat dinner and gala events; modular staging can be added for performances, or it can be set up for lectures and films. There is even room to play games, do yoga, or build Jerusalem out of LEGOS – trust us , we did!
Follow our dramatic staircase to the second floor where there is a warm and spacious multi-purpose room, perfect for meetings and celebrations for 20-120 people; our Beit Midrash is an inspiring prayer and learning space with its cathedral ceiling, wood paneling, built in book cases and a Holy Ark made of wood, metal, and Jerusalem stone. The round Reform Sanctuary provides incredible acoustics for prayer and singing with its two-story, domed ceiling; the Library, with dramatic windows and barrel ceiling is perfect for classes, presentations, meetings, and studying.
The Center for Israel Engagement demonstrates the centrality of Israel to Jewish identity and is usually the busiest space in the building; a beautifully appointed program kitchen provides students with a great space for cooking, challah baking, and a place to find snacks and surprise meals; the soon-to-open Wellness Program Center will provide a discrete but accessible location for student counselling and education; the lounge, with its comfy chairs and couch is a great place to put your feet up, open up your laptop, or just chill; the Study Hall provides private carrels when serious study is needed. Did we even mention the skylights and antique, stained glass windows?
